5 PUPPY FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW

It’s time for a little trivia! Can you guess the answers to these questions about puppies? If you already knew all of these puppy facts we commend your knowledge. If not, we hope you have fun learning more about our favourite furry friends.

EVERY PUPPY IS UNIQUE – OR ARE THEY?

This may be one of our more surprising puppy facts, given that the answer remained a mystery until recent times. It turns out identical twin puppies are a real phenomenon. Technically every puppy born in a litter is considered a fraternal twin, but it’s been shown that there can also be identical twin puppies. When performing a routine C-section on Irish Wolfhounds, a vet noticed that two puppies were attached to the same placenta through their umbilical cords. Later, genetic testing confirmed the puppies were indeed identical twins.

CAN A DOG HAVE TWO DOZEN PUPPIES IN A LITTER?

Tia, a Mastiff, gave birth to a grand total of 24 puppies in a single litter. While the average number of puppies in a litter varies from breed to breed, the range is typically between 5-8. Caring for even a small litter of puppies can be a handful, so we strongly recommend leaving breeding to the professionals. In the case of Tia, her puppies needed to be delivered through a C-section. Sadly, one puppy was stillborn and a few more passed away within the first week.

HOW MANY TEETH DO PUPPIES HAVE WHEN THEY’RE BORN?

None! Puppies are born without teeth. Their first set of teeth comes in around 4 weeks, then they get their adult teeth around 4 months of age. This explains why teething is a common occurrence, so being prepared for this stage with healthy teething toys can help keep your furniture and shoes from getting chewed up. Here are a couple of bonus puppy facts: they’re also born blind and deaf. This explains why they need so much sleep to continue their development.

HOW OLD ARE PUPPIES WHEN THEY GET THEIR FULL COAT?

Did you know dogs shed their puppy coat? It takes place around 4-6 months old. They shed their puppy coat to make way for their full adult coat. It’s often less soft, but better equipped to deal with the outdoor environment through offering protection from sunburns, as well as greater insulation to keep them cool or warm depending on the season. It’s important to understand the benefits of their coat, and why some breeds should never be shaved.

HOW MANY HOURS DO PUPPIES SLEEP PER DAY?

You might be a little jealous when you hear how long puppies sleep each day. It’s a whopping 15-20 hours, which is similar to our own babies. As it turns out, it takes a lot of rest to fully develop their eyes, teeth, and coat. When they’re not sleeping, puppies will take time to eat, play, and explore their surroundings. Puppies will gradually spend more time awake as they age, giving you more time to bond with them, as well as to begin training and socialization.
